Treacle Scones Recipe

This is a recipe for treacle scones which, in Scotland at least, is a popular "tea-time" treat. Treacle is also known as molassess in some countries and the recipe is the same it is merely the name which has changed.

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons black treacle (molasses)
Pinch of salt
Half a teaspoon of cinnamon
Approximately quarter pint of milk

8 oz self-raising flour (all-purpose flour with baking powder in USA)
2 oz butter
1 oz caster sugar (fine granulated sugar)

Method:
Sift the flour and salt into a bowl and rub in the butter. Mix in the sugar, cinnamon, treacle and enough milk to the flour mixture to make a soft dough. Knead this on a floured surface until it is both moist and elastic.

Cut the mixture into rounds with a 2 inch pastry cutter. Grease a baking sheet (cookie sheet) and place the rounds on this. Brush with a little milk (to glaze) and bake for 12/15 minutes in an oven, pre-heated to 425F/220C/Gas Mark 7 until golden brown (the mixture will be quite dark even before cooking).

Allow to cool on a wire rack and serve split in half with butter.

As with all recipes which involve cooking and baking a sensible approach must be taken especially when dealing with warm or hot (temperature) ingredients. If you are unable to take due care, please do not attempt to make any of these recipes. All recipes are tried at your own risk.
