Whilst in modern times the awarding of a cap is a symbolic gesture, at its inception the cap (an actual hat/ head wear) would have helped identify the players from opposing teams as the idea of football strips wasn't common practice. As can be seen from the picture the cap was quite ornate and many became treasured possesions. |
