Scottish Maiden Guillotine

National Museum Pictures

This is a picture of a Scottish maiden, a guillotine like execution device Historically, the Scots had invented and were using the guillotine known as the Maiden long before it became (in)famous for its use during the French Revolution. From 1564 up to 1708 when it was withdrawn from use, over 150 people had been executed with this 'humane' device. For further info see the BBC website.
